Is there such thing as absolute freedom?

It is more fun criticizing

Notwithstanding the assertion by philosopher Jean Paul Sarte on absolute freedom, this post believes and agrees with some some thoughts of others.

Freedom is not a being; it is the being of man-i.e. his nothingness of being. If we start by conceiving of man as a plenum, it is absurd to try and find in him afterwards moments or psychic regions in which he would be free. As weil look for emptiness in a container which one has filled beforehand up to the brim! Man can not be sometimes slave and sometimes free; he is wholly and forever free or he is not free at ail. Jean-Paul SARTRE.!

I have encountered several cases where men have wanted to be absolutely free:

    1.   Defiance of many citizens in USA to observe health protocols, and object to vaccine
    2.   Several lot buyers objecting to restrictions for construction on the plot, claiming that their
          ownership is absolute.

Nothing can be farther from the truth

We have the freedom to make  choice in life.  God gave us that right

But our actions are limited by the environment, the govt around us, the legalities.  As we have freedom, this involves the recognition have the same freedom and rights as we do.

Araw ng Kalayaan (Freedom Day) or Independence (Kasarinlan)

It is more fun criticizing

Many clarifications were made by commentators on the distinction between the two and the implications.  Freedom day means somebody gave the freedom to you and that implies too colonial mentality and we are always beholden to the party that gave us freedom.  Still neo colonialist attitude.  But the imperial colonizers are no longer here.

It is better to talk about independence.   About kasarinlan.  About being responsible for our fate and not being dependent on the colonizing or stronger party.  We have to find our own inspiration and strength.  It is about courage, confidence, leadership and responsibility for our fate.

Land of the free (or the responsible?)

Social and political criticisms

Free dom has acquired  a new meaning;  so has "land of the free" in a national anthem.  It is more like the free of Chris Anderson.

Many citizens see that it is their right to expect to get free from the state.  The state is compelled to borrow massively to finance this culture of "free" entitlement.  State has to borrow massively to give free livelihood, food and the like to its citizen.  Result?

In the PHL, the free culture forces many politicians to have jueteng and many fund raising projects to fund/finance the need of their constituents  for free.  So you cant really abolish PDAF or jueteng.  No legislation can do that.

I saw how overpowering this idea of "free " is .  The homemaker did not arrive this morning to do the laundry, because she has to fall in line for a free from the LGU for the flood victims.  She missed a handsome pay for the day in favor of a measly free goods!

Unless our citizens subscribe to the mental model asked for by fmr President JFK  "Ask not what your country can do for you, not what your country can for you."

It is not about freedom, it is about responsibility
