Why is Bashi Chanel between Batanes and Taiwan critical in current geopolitical conflict?

It is more fun criticizing

It has become an eyesore an obstacle for the Chinese PLA.  Why?

It will delay PROC reunification with Taiwan?  And US in aid of Taiwan, and in friendship with 

with Philippines will make the obstacles real...
