I hope that the one who said that will be able to keep her words.
One of the test of integrity and success is the ability to keep the words and promises. Otherwise you just become another loud mouthed trapo politician; or a promising solon - full of promises.
Let us go back to the promise. How will she do this? By having many social welfare programs. Where do you get funding from this? From taxes or deficit spending. How do you raise the taxes?
Will the public agree to more taxes? Who will pay the taxes? The very small tax base we have? We borrow more? Who will shoulder the costs/expenses?
If the taxes cant be raised, the good senator will be forced to dip into her office funds - her CDF and the whole cycle of patronage (albeit corrupt) practices kicks in.

Can politicians really deliver promise to save citizens from poverty?

The election is over and looking back the winners won on slogans of protecting the poor, and lifting them from poverty.
The leading senatorial lady elect candidate just did that - promising to take care of the poor. How noble and how stately promises.
But can they really do it?
Erap went for motto, "Erap para sa mahihirap" and easily won.
But poverty is a complex situation in life. The government is not equipped to solve the personal problems of citizens. The responsibility to exist and survive and be successful belongs to the individual and not government.
To pretend that the public sector leadership can solve the problem is a deception if not an outright lie. Yet many are gullible enough to believe.
If we are to solve poverty through budgets and social welfare legislature, then we simply defer the inevitable and states are ill equipped to administer dole outs and social welfare. There is simply too little resources to feed millions of hungry mouths. If at all activists hate and wants to remove politics of patronage. Ie the feudal landlord relationships, where feudal landlords dictate the lives of their fiefdom. Nothing is achieved to repair/recast the system and the whole cycle of poverty remains.
In European countries and USA, the socialist leaning of governments to fight poverty through state welfare, without corresponding productive and adaptive capabilities has resulted in financial bankruptcies of states. Their governments borrowed heavily to fund social programs: health, education and welfare, resulting in massive billions of debt that governments can not hope to pay.
Even more so, how can you not charge taxes and still finance the social welfare, and/or service the huge debts?
The other alternative/options would be to fund this from: PCSO, lotto, or contributions by contractors, lobbyists, other vested interests, and /or jueteng. And eventually, the politician would be labelled as corrupt.
Are the promises too simplistic, not well understood by those who mouthed them, or they just took the gamble.
At the end of the day, they would be unable to keep their promises and be junked later in the next election

Do you still believe that Mr. Politico can lead us to the Promised Land?

Are you still one of those who believe that your favorite politico/candidate can make your life better?
I had a compadre before who even cried because the dictator fled and had to be replaced by a female president. He said that ever since, his life was littered by misfortune?
Would you believe the intimation sometime that a boxer won because of the support from Lady President (the way the congratulatory messages were made)
Do you think that Presidents/Senators have been responsible for our splendid economic growth?
Yes they legislated the laws, had the infrastructures, the enablers made.
But without the entrepreneurs who work hard, without the workers who labor it out, without the logistics infrastructure made by private sector, there could be no progress. Was the BPO growth brought about by public sector initiative or tax incentives, or the huge OFW remittances.
Obviously, you would be a believer in this if you depend on your mayor or barangay chief for your daily bread, or even the caesarian delivery of your wife. For those who live under the politics of patronage, or under the shadow of feudalism (their landlord is a politico) then you are caught in the vicious cycle, within which there would be escape nor progresss.

Pro Poor Programs

It is nice to take care of the poor. It is asked of us to be compassionate. However, we should be more positive and make the poor productive and independent.
Let us not encourage mendicancy and politics of patronage. Each one is responsible for his life and to live on his own. The mayor can not take care of your medical bills and worse, the delivery of the baby. The mayor did not impregnate the wife.
