Destruction in Marawi city by Maute group
If you were the President of the Philippines, with the multitude of problems in Mindanao not declare martial law? The last straw would be the Maute group attack (reportedly backed by ISIS - look at the flag they are waving) in addition to NPA attacks the ASG, and the disorder in Zamboanga.
What are the options available?
Would you not declare martial law if you encountered the following attacks:
Lorenzana also confirmed that Maute bandits began occupying some establishments in the city like Amai Pakpak Medical Center, the City Hall, and the city jail. He also verified that the church, city jail, Ninoy Aquino School and Dansalan College have been set on fire by the group. “As of tonight (Tuesday, May 23), the Maute group burned several facilities – the church, city jail, the Ninoy Aquino School and the Dansalan College. The Maute fighters still occupy also the main street of Marawi city called the Quezon Street and two bridges,” Lorenzana said. Senior Superintendent Oscar Nantes, Lanao del Sur police provincial director, said the fighting erupted when the Maute group opened fire on personnel from the military’s 103rd Brigade. "When the firefight ensued, there were reported re-enforcement from the symphatizers of Maute where pocket firefight erupted in nearby areas," Hererra said. What would you do especially if the bandits are in the hundreds or thousands converging on the city, with such firepower and bold enough to take over govt installations, burn churches, take hostages and even backed by international terrorists like ISIS (and even displaying such flag in the Philippines) Would you not use the full power of your office to crush such a rebellious act.? It is so easy to judge this from Manila or even from your armchair or a hamburger joint. Go ahead and make your call if 50 caliber bullets are whizzing by your ears
Scout Ranger killed in Maute group clash. As per DZMM news, 9 soldiers have been killed and 39 others were wounded as of last night. Would you not declare martial law Included among the dead were deputy police inspector of Marawi City and chief of police in neighboring municipality
Maybe we just have too many armchair analysts and pundits who will be against such declaration but would not offer any other options. Definitely the CPP NPA Renato Reyes would be against this as this will limit the movement of their troops and would be unable to stage propaganda attacks vs the govt. (Probably we should stop the press from giving media footage to such groups whose only goal is to destabilize the govt.
How would you deal with a bandit group brandishing 50 caliber long guns and sniper power who would even take shots at the army ground command center and provincial capitol. How can you restore order. Why not limit martial law in Lanao. There are other disorder in MIndanao that have to be dealt with in a single stroke.
GMA declared martial in Mindanao because of the Ampatuan murder, and even if the crisis was over. No one raised an uproar nor noticed the declaration.
If you were the Pres of the Philippines what would you do?
