Improving the favelas at Rio de Janeiro (Rocinha)

It is more fun criticizing

Old Rocinha

New Rocinha

From Globe eye - improving the favelas

From Geography Learn on the Internet

I again saw at the TV the AJ feature on Rocinha, one of the 600 favelas at Rio de Janeiro.   Favelas are the equivalent of slum areas - make shift houses and of light materials.. Starvation amidst plenty.   Rocinha is beside Copacabana. and fronts the gorgeus beachfront property.  It is home to some 90 to 160t population

Very near the Copacobana beach

Lately there has been a clamor to improve Rocinha.  There was a redeveloment which involved road development and open space for sports facilities.  The govt has provided self help projects for people to build houses of stronger materials

Other favelas clamor for:

1.  Water

2.  Sanitation and hygiene.  Sewage effluent flow through the favelas to one central outfall to the beach front, with untreated sewage.

However, City Dads would prefer cable cars be built over the favelas?

Can Philippines learn from the Favela improvement on dealing with our urban dwellers.?
