The flagship of Russian navy,  $750 million destroyer Muscova  caught fire and sank at Black Sea.  No one can say for sure the cause and some say it is the Ukrainian missile Neptune that sank it.   Surely it is a great embarrassment to Putin and  will not let it past.  All ready there are news that the  missile plant of Ukraine has been destroyed due  to a Russian attack

How come a high tech ship can be attacked without much effort.  It is supposed to be an air defense unit.  The high tech equipment failed?   The crew was not well trained?

Putin will most likely:

     1.  Launch decisive attacks vs key Ukraine cities

     2.  Will make attacks more shocking

     3.  Will involve countries who are providing armaments to Ukraine like UK and US

The lady senator now being investigated at Congress claims that Lt. Col Ferdinand Marcelino is being pressured to testify against her.  The lady showed text messages to classmate of Marcelino for the support of the lady senator while he was incarcerated, and that there was pressure.   The good colonel denies being pressured

In a sudden turn of events, Marcelino, the case vs Marcelino revived last Wednesday last Wednesday after it was dismissed last June.  (Marcelino was accused at Manila RTC together with Chinese national Yan Hi Shou for being in possession of P380 million worth of illegal drugs.)

There were allegations that the lady visited Marcelino while he was incarcerated.

Marcelino sought the help of PAO and filed for motion to stop the warrant of arrest and to quash the case that is being revived.

The Philippine Drug War and the political intramural has made to the international laundrymat:   Christiane Amanpour interviewed Senators Leila de Lima and Peter Alan Cayetano regarding the spate of EJ killings in the country that are related to the drug war.  Sen de Lima denounced the killings as summary execution;   Sen Cayetano defended the President.

This post frowns on the de Lima denunciation. What could have been a purely domestic quarrel has reached the international arena and has put the country and its leadership in bad light. In a way the grudge war with the President has escalated and in the balance of power, she could be the mega loser A netizen, certain Inocencio has denounced the lady Senator for bringing down the country and its leadership name in the international community. Bombing in Roxas District in Davao City kills 14, injures 60, DU30 declares state of lawless violence

There was a bombing in night market in Roxas district in Davao City that killed 14 and injured 60.  The bomb was alleged to be an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) made from mortar, according to Director General Bato PNP.  It was alleged to have been left by two women.

ASG who are under attack in Sulu claimed responsibility, probably as a ploy to relieve pressure on them as a diversionary tactic, to place PNP on defensive rather than offensive mode.


Pres. DU30 declared a state of lawless violence to heighten the awareness of PNP and AFP on security.  It is not supposed to suppress human rights, cancellation of the writ of habeas corpus, or warrantless arrest as being speculated by some congressmen.  All ready some solons are issuing alarmist statements that have many peaceful citizens to be worried

It has to be made on nationwide basis to protect centers of population in the country from further violence.  Thus there would be check points and frisking of vehicles to prevent travel of terrorists

Or it could be part of the scenario plot to weaken DU30 as envisioned and declared by former admin staff who said the plot was to focus electing the VP Robredo, have Duterte removed by various means that includes but not limited to stunting the campaign against drugs, shaming DU30 before the world (as D5) has done with CNN Friday.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte solidified his lead over his closest rival who is now admin candidate Mar Roxas, as of 3:00 am today:

Duterte is leading with 14,730,937 votes as of 3:20 a.m. of Tuesday (May 10).  His lead over the 2nd placer is nearly 6 million.

Liberal Party's (LP) Manuel "Mar" Roxas is in second with 8,829,758 votes, while independent candidate Grace Poe is in third place with 8,283,562 while United Nationalist Alliance bet Jejomar "Jojo" Binay has 4,921,758 votes, while Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago has 1,342,383 votes.

A Muslim scholar was recently interviewed at CNN at GPS by Fareed Zakaria.  She was kicked out of school for Muslim for being gay.  She said however that the interpretation of Islam should be corrected. For instance, the 72 virgin reward for jihadist.  It was wrong. It more of 72 raisins. (This did not come from Quran but from unreliable hadids)

When there are killings and violence in the name of jihadist and Muslim, the moderates are quick to defend the offenders. And apologize.  But we all know that Quran asked the offenders/jihadists to do just what they did.

Washington DC - paying criminals not to murder

This post saw at CNN the article of GPS regarding a novel way of halting crime rates - bribing known criminals to stop committing crimes.  This would cost only $9,000 per year.  The  known criminals are brought into program of anger management, etc and if they stay, they are paid a certain amount.   The whole program for 20 people would cost roughly $400,000 as against the huge budget for correctional facilities.  This is being tried in Washington D.C in a law that has been passed.  This has been experimented in Richmond VA, one of the most dangerous places to be in USA.  The program has mixed if not limited result.

Crimes could have devastating cost the society:  the legal, detention, anguish, medical costs could run into billions.  Would this novel idea work?

Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) is indeed the moment of truth, the defining moment for the "Tuwid na Daan" of this regime!

The comments of Christianne  Amanpour of CNN to the President during their interview, post Yolanda typhoon crisis, still ring clearly in my ears " How your respond to this crisis, defines your Presidency"  as he was embarrassed by apparent grasp of reality on the ground.

As I got the other stories from somebody whose relatives were victims of the typhoon  (Inside story of the Typhoon Haiyan devastation)  there were several incidents that may not speak well of the rule of the national govt:

1,  The staging of relief distribution;

2.  The repacking of relief goods by the government agencies.

3.  The military commandeering the relief goods for personal use of disposition.

4.   The grandstanding of the Presidency with the LGU Mayor Alfred Romualdez

5.  The military men leading the civilian in commandeering private goods for personal use (the military were in bonnet as seen in TV and fully armed)

It is the time for compassion rather than greed.  How the people in the govt, representing the national government really really reflects zillions the values, the mores of the present govt, and whether the leadership now, has made a dent on how we run things here, especially during crisis.

There was an interview at GPS with Stephen Flynn and Lowe Garrett about the storm that hit the PHL.  Some observations:

1.  The response by the PHL and the international community was slow because many did not appreciate the magnitude and strength of the typhoon.  Much data was available about the size and extent of the storm, but action preparedness did not ensue

2.  Preparation for the storm in terms of infrastructure must come before the storm;   you cant possibly cope with the aftermath if you have failed hospital

3.  We are  in a learning curve to deal with super disaster.   PHL could not have done better.

 CNNs Cooper scores PNOY govt for slow aid response


The debate has been brewing over the  performance of the PNOY cabinet on the Yolanda tragedy:

1.  Sec. Mar Roxas said that the devastation was so much that the LGUs could not attend to the needs of everyone.  But people were relying on the word of the Pres prior to the arrival of the typhoon. But we thought, that the national govt would be given its full support (meaning to say the cabinet officials had anticipated the extent of the damage that might result from the supertyphoon)

2.  The residents/victims and some UN officials point to lack of knowledge and information and coordination on the ground. There was lack of good management and leadership?   Hmmm this is an embarrassment to us PNOYs

CNNs Senior Correspondent Anderson Cooper has scored the PNOY govt for slow response to the tragedy (lack of direction and leadership?)

 It wasn’t only Cooper who came up with these criticisms of the Aquino government’s handling of the relied and rescue. Other CNN reporters covering the typhoon story had the same observation.
Cooper’s plane was only able to land at the airport when the US marines cleared the airport of debris. Another CNN correspondent, Andrew Stevens said: “(I’m) increasingly frustrated.
“You walk around downtown Tacloban, there’s pile of rotting garbage; there are corpses and animals; there’s no real evidence of organized recovery, organized relief going on.”
The correspondent said he saw a van distributing relief goods but he guessed it was good only for 50 people. “There are tens of thousands of people who need food, water, clothes and medicines. “The frustration down there is extraordinary high,” the correspondent added.
In the midst of incredible disaster being experience by almost 700,000 people in the Visayas where an estimated 10,000 have died while others are convulsing in hunger, President Aquino was still in his usual blame the others mode, this time again on local officials for not heeding the “distress call”.
In his interview over CNN international with Amanpour, Aquino was asked about his responsibility as President. He was also asked whether or not he would agree that “the way you (Aquino) respond and your government respond to this terrible devastation will probably define your presidency”.
“I think you’re gonna ask all of the governors, for instance, on the areas that have been saying that… are making them aware of the dangers that were forthcoming from this typhoon that enabled them to move their population from danger areas and to safer areas and thereby minimize casualties.
“A lot of them, with the exception of Leyte province, Eastern and Western Samar, have reported that practically, well, one or two casualties or even zero casualties, when normally when we have a typhoon you will also have ships that were travelling that would have sunk, casualties in the hundreds probably didn’t merit too much attention,” was Aquino’s excuse.
On a personal note, Aquino was asked: ”How has it affected you, what you’ve seen, and how do you manage to reassure your people who have gone through this super typhoon, after the earthquake, after the typhoon last year?
Aquino said typhoons in the country are not unusual occurrences, but that this year has been an exceptionally bad year, with more than 20 visits.
He then claimed that he has been able to “demonstrate as a government and as a people, collectively, that we take care of each other and the government’s immediate response, I think, has been reassuring to the vast majority of our people,” claiming that he has that ability to take care of problems rather quickly.
He put the blame on the local executives, saying it is they who are responsible for the relief and rescue operations.
“Our system says that the local government units have to take care of the initial response,” Aquino said.
Rosemarie Church, a CNN anchor in Atlanta Georgia, commented that Aquino was trying to evade responsibility. Her co-anchor agreed with her.
In the worst hit areas where some of the local officials could not be seen or are presumed dead, survivors are looking up into the heavens, and the dead people, old and young, are piling up.
Aquino simply denied the slow response, as well as the bottleneck of trying to give vital aid to the people, laying all blame on the local executives.

Some 150 SAF PNP officers were sent to Tacloban in the wake of reports of looting of groceries and fast foods in the city.  The chaos was attributed to the low visibility of the PNP and military after the typhoon onslaught.  This looting was similar to the aftermath of the typhoon Katrina.  There was a report of widespread looting in Lousiana after the typhoon.

The streets of Tacloban City in Leyte were in chaos Saturday as several residents began looting grocery stores and breaking into shops for food and other basic items they needed to survive in the aftermath of typhoon Yolanda.

 

Video footage recorded by the team of GMA News correspondent Jiggy Manicad showed several men breaking into what appeared to be the storage area of a grocery store in the city and grabbing as much bread and softdrinks bottles as they can get.

 

Manicad said some residents have even resorted to forcibly entering fast food shops and destroying ATMs to get food and cash.

 

Looting in Tacloban City has been attributed to low police and military presence in the area after the typhoon, Manicad said. 

 

"Sa lawak ng pinsalang idinulot nitong bagyo, masyadong manipis yung pagpapakalat ng awtoridad para i-handle yung sitwasyon kaya't ganito na ang nangyayari [dito], kanya-kanyang diskarte na, partikular na dito sa lungsod ng Tacloban," he said.

 

Manicad said the lone policeman he saw in the area where looting was taking place was powerless to stop the residents because he was outnumbered and people were already desperate for food and other necessities."

 

Those who learned of the looting are hesitant to help.  However the other points of view is that looting is not necessarily stealing but a way to survive;  the infrastructures and the govt has failed.  If the "looters take only what they need to survive, then that is just a an answer for desire to survive.  If they take electronics of a 42 inch LED tv, then that is stealing.

 

Calamities bring out the best and worst in people. Looting is not one of the best that should come out of our people. It was shameful to watch our Visayan kababayan doing that.  The international communities I am sure viewed that.  We are not animals.  We are above the solons and the NGOs being charged and investigated at the Senate and elsewhere. Where is the dignity and Christian Values?  Difficulties does not give excuse to disobey the ten commandments (Bishops?)

Is looting when there are no supplies justified?   

Promise of aid, and concern of kababayan is very admireable.

President Pepe Mujica was very right in saying that those are poor are those whose needs are not satisfied.

 Is obtaining supplies in order to survive stealing? Or just a survival instincts?   PNP bosses must read this link so that they can be properly guided. 




               
                  

Deadly pressure cooker bomb - you can be dead before you hear it

Outfront investigators and David Mattingly saw how a pressure cooker bomb works.  The shock wave, blast, and sharpnel goes ahead of the sound of the blast, thus you could be dead before you hear it.

The investigators were in a bunker some 1/4 mile away from the bomb and used nuts instead of nails.  The effect was devastating.  While the blast, very similar to the picture on Boston (with white plume) as only 20 ft across, the shock wave and sharpnel moved farther.

Thus for the first responder they should be wary of the danger posed by the sharpnel right after explosion

The bomb costs less than $100 to make yet is very deadly;  it should not inspire local youth to copy this deadly adventure.  

If you have weak personality, and you to US, then you become  a deadly menace to US society.

I hope Americans do not become xenophobic to migrants (arent they yet?)
