The budget hearing for the Office of the Vice President did not turn out good and to be uneventful.   Some say that it was intended by the detractors of the VP to embarrass /piss her off.   Some say that the OVP was a spoiled brat who does not want to be questioned   (Some even lampooned the event likening this to a thesis defense where the presentor says she waives her Q and A portion.   (The panel can give her an F!)

1.  Price control for basic commoditiies

2.  Higher taxes for various income levels  (like taxes on unrealized capital gains which can go beyond 40%)

Many observes say her economic plans are popular.   They say this is Kamalinism

3rd night of novena for Patron Saint of which my eldest daughter is the hermano

This post has to be pious lately because my daughter is the hermano of a Patron Saint.  The Novena started last August 7 and will end on August 6.    There are some lessons, take home after observing the novena:

1.   While the prayers are repetitious, they  tests your focus and patience.  I bought a speed reading tape and I found out that the best way to make you retain much in your speed reading is through focus.  You have to engage in something that is repetitious like prayers or novena or rosary.

2.  The novenas, being a hermano is well organized and structured.  There are other hermanos for band, for the altar for the sound system and the like.  My daughter's role was to provide the venue for the altar and the novena.  She had to spend on the plants for the garden surrounding the altar, resurface the garage floor,  had two tents built for the duration of the novena so that the participants cant get wet in case of rain.  Yesterday there was rain.  (There were ruffled feathers when my daughter wrote a long letter making suggestions for the improvement of the system.  It has got to be that way.  Period)

There were people in charge of dressing the saints every day.

3.  Inclusivity.   Everybody was there.   There were children.  There were ladies in shorts There were people with tattoos.  There were members of the LBQT community.  There were really pious and elderly people.  Who just came to pray and honor the patron saint.   

4.  Faith.  You can feel fervor and faith from the attendees.  You see the same people and they dont mind reciting the same prayer.  You can feel their Catholicism, their adherence to light and good vs  the dark and the bad.   

5.  Sense of continuity and history.   There were booklets of novena.  The owner of the saint was there and was present for the last three days. 

6.  Modernity and tradition.   Despite being a religious ritual and tradition, about 1/5 of attendees scroll their cellphone, even choir members and the 6 pc brass band members while prayers are going on.  

While other religions might criticize us for violation of the first commandment for venerating saints, and having other gods, nothing can be further from the truth   We love and honor God, as we honor and pray to the saints.  These activities are signs of faith love and belief in God and His creation

The latest news is that former head of Comelec Andres Bautista has been indicted (charged) with bribery charges in USA together with 3 others.  

The allegation is that this is related to the procurement of election machines.  The long arm of the law caught up with them.  Are there cases related to bribery during the election

When USA sneezes, the whole world trembles:  Some weaknesses in US economy:

1.  Weakening of regional bank;   one regional bank to close every week

2.  Largest share of GDP is consumer spending.  70% of total GDP, and is financed by credit cards

3.  Apocalypse of commercial real estate;   about to crash

4.  Banks sitting on large portfolio of commercial loans;

5.  Weak residential market (repeat of 2008)

6.  Large number of unemployment.   Even top tier company:    Google, Tesla, Intel.

The BOJ decision to increase interest rate and rising yen has hammered the carry trade.   And it is no longer wise to hold on to carry trade.    Thus hedge funds and other money funds are disgorging their carry holdings to stave off losses.   The two events are causing the carry trade to be unprofitable.  

Is this revenge for the nuke bombing of its two cities vs USA and the world (no basis)

We just wonder how this event would:

1.  Affect Japanese yen loans to the Philippines;

2.  Budgeted/approved yen loans to Philippine projects

There is greater uncertainty with USA because of huge debt.   Its a $36 trillion now.  And USA adds $1 trillion every 100 days.  The idea now is not to pay the debt and just keep on printing more money.   But all will come crashing soon.

Questions:

1.  How is this crisis going to affect our relatives living in USA?

2.  How is this going to affect local banks and businesses.?

All ready local stock markets are down?  How about local banks?  Will this crisis affect remittances and our OFWs

Triggered by:    negative news on US economy.   Move by Bank of Japan to increase % rates. (which has kept Yen artificially law)  resulting in yen carry trade.   

Carry trade is unwinding and margin calls are no longer profitable.  

This is worrisome

So with:    car repos up by 23% in 2024,  banks have more problem loans,  commercial loans that can default in a year or two,  increase in public debt by $100 billion in three days.  US debt is now $36 trillion

Who what is responsible for this bloodbath?

Nikkei and Dax markets fell. Weaknesses in the economy showing through the stock market -  low job creation, high unemployment. very high interest payments for massive US $35 trillion debt

It was mentioned that Buffet was unloading lots of stocks.  He mentioned that US market is overvalued by 40%.  He has cashed out to be ready for bargain hunting during the crash.

Why are they crashing?   Because of prospect of recession in US.  Less than expected job creation and high unemployment rate.  Global uncertainty due to Iran Israel escalation of conflict. Bangladesh turmoil.

Stock market as in Nikkei saw double digit decline during trading.  This is unseen and reminiscent of 1987 crash.   

Should we be worried?  Or Phisix has plunged well ahead of the world market.   Will the Philippine GDP growth be affected.?

Should we continue with the Maharlika (sovereign fund)  Or is it going to do bargain hunting for collapsed stocks?

The new administration is embroiled in a growing controversy regarding the rise in unprogrammed budget items at the Office of the President.  The rise is to be sourced from GOCC, says the sources.  One of them is Philhealth.  All ready there are questions being raised in courts regarding the legality of such orders

Indonesia has begun constructing new capital city to Nusantara in Borneo because it is sinking    The over use of ground water (no place for reservoir) and climate change has subjected Jakarta the current capital city to sinking.

Should not Philippines think of same move.  Most of Manila is below the sea level, it is too subject to climate change (just recall the recent flood) and the numerous reclamation project that is pushing more seawater elsewhere.
